TRIP

In a book that is quite famous in the world of Sufism, Kasyful Mahjub, we are told that once the Caliph al-Mansur of the Abbasid dynasty scholars invited four great jurist to come to his palace. They are Abu Hanifah, Sufyan al-Tsauri, Mis `ar ibn Qidam, and Syuraih.

The Caliph intended to lift them into the kingdom of supreme judge (Qadi), a highly strategic position more appealing. However, these four great scholars agree that reject the request Caliph al-Mansur. Sufyan al-Tsauri chose to flee to a harbor and hide under the ship about to sail, while others went to the palace to convey rejection.

Arriving at the palace, the Caliph Abu Hanifa pointed to the justices, but he tried to dodge by saying, "O Commander of the Faithful, I am not an Arab but a friend of the Arabs. Arab leaders will not accept the decision of Supreme Court justices like me."

Caliph Abu Hanifa accepted the objection and called Mis `ar ibn Qidam to come forward. "You must be a supreme judge," appointed Caliph al-Mansur. However, Mis `ar menaggapinya by pretending to behave like a madman. "Remove this person (Mis` ar - Red), it was crazy! " cried the Caliph al-Mansur.

Stay a scholar again, Syuraih was commanded to fill the vacancy Qadi. Syuraih the same objection as previously made by the two scholars. Syuraih said, "O Caliph, I was easy to be sad and fond of jokes, but someone who likes joking penyedih and not worthy of being a judge." However, Syuraih refusal was not accepted by the Caliph al-Mansur. Conversely, by the caliph, was asked to take the helm Syuraih judiciary, because there is no longer a very competent scholars to hold that office. Meanwhile, other scholars have expressed rejection of the supreme magistracy.

The story that happened to the golden era of Islamic scholars reflects the firmness in holding to the principle of not tempted by the sweetness of power. For them, power is a very frightening specter. Since, it has the potential to narrow the space and independence of the clergy. In addition, the office of judge was very heavy, because it is a mandate that mahaberat and can turn them from the worship of Allah SWT. Therefore, instead of fighting positions, the scholars actually trying to avoid all forms of worldly temptations of power and of themselves. They always avoid it in various ways.

In contrast to current conditions, many people including scholars abuzz even close to power, even join forces to achieve it. As a result, scholars no longer guide and protect the people, but use it as a lubricant to the seat of power. How we will miss the presence of scholars such as Abu Hanifa that maintains the integrity and personality and able to resist occupation, no matter how high up that power. We long for scholars who choose to purity of heart rather than the beauty of her home.
